activated carbon and methane gas
Methane Is A Very Dangerous Greenhouse Gas - Activated Carbon Information
Greenhouse gases are substances that are trapped in our atmosphere and act like a greenhouse, preventing ultra violet light from escaping and raising the temperature of the atmosphere. There are a large number of gasses that make up this layer, some are man-made and some naturally occurring. The challenge for us is to reduce the amount of these gases we produce so we don’t contribute to global warming and all of its unintended consequences.
Probably the most well know of the
greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide. This gas is produced by a number of
activities like breathing, cars, and burning fossil fuels. There are
large efforts underway to reduce the amount of this gas we produce and
offset it as well with things like trees that absorb it naturally.
Another gas that doesn’t get as much attention, but it should, is
methane. Methane is a naturally occurring gas that also adds to the
greenhouse affect and contributes to global warming. The really bad
thing about methane is that it is 21 times more effective at trapping
solar radiation than carbon dioxide. The problem is that some of our
activities are artificially producing massive amounts of methane as
well, amplifying the problem. For example, swampy areas produce methane
naturally but if we clear land and create rice patties we amplify this
affect substantially. These artificially created “swamps” can be a
major contributor to methane production. Another source of methane is
cows. When we clear land to create cow farms, we again are magnifying
the problem of methane production. When we undertake these activities,
we should be careful to also put in place other things like tree
planting efforts that can help to offset the additional greenhouse
gasses we create.
